Netherlands open the first solar energy road generator

We wish we could see this kind of technology in our region. The first road capable of turning sunlight into energy officially opened in Netherlands.

What if we cover the highways with solar panels? This interesting idea has come true in Netherlands, this could help reduce the dependence on oil that produces the climate change and global warming.

This road is actually a cycle way 70.1 meters long at the city of Krommeine. The way called ‘SolaRoad’, is integrated by 2,5 x 2,5 mts. concrete modules covered with solar panels made of tempered slip resistant glass to prevent accidents.

Someday cycles and vehicles could recharge batteries directly from the roads.

Since the SolaRoad officially began to operate, had produced 140 Kilowatts per hour, this is the energy consumed by 140 washmachines.

At the moment the electricity generated is added to the local power grid but in the future could be used to illuminate the streets.

Netherlands is eager for renewables energies, with a population of 17 million, bicycles are a popular transportation system. The government goal is to multiply 3 times the actual renewable energy use by the year 2020.
